Longtime Flyers play-by-play voice Jim Jackson has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Bill Campbell Broadcast Award at the 115th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association’s Jan. 21 banquet at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill. The event is open to the public – for tickets go to www.phillysportswriters.com.
With more than 30 years of experience in the field, Jackson has won eight Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards for his sports broadcasting.
Jackson has been broadcasting Flyers games since 1993, first on radio, and since 1995 on television. He has been a popular contributor to the Phillies Radio Network since 2007, hosting pregame and postgame shows, along with play-by-play responsibilities.
A graduate of Syracuse University, Jackson was named by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association as the Pennsylvania Sportscaster of the Year.
In his celebrated career, he has called baseball, hockey, football, basketball and lacrosse games at various levels. He has been a sports-talk host on WIP radio, and he wrote a book, “Walking Together Forever: The Broad Street Bullies.”
This is the fourth year the Campbell award has been presented. Past honorees have been Sixers announcer Marc Zumoff, Eagles announcer Merrill Reese and Phillies radio announcer team Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen.
The Campbell award is presented for excellence in broadcasting; local sportscasters, talk-show hosts, and radio/TV reporters or commentators are eligible.
Campbell, whose remarkable career touched parts of nine decades, was a broadcaster for the Eagles, Phillies and Warriors/76ers, as well as a sports talk-show host. A member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, he died in 2014 at 91.
Jackson joins Living Legend Mike Quick, Pro Athlete of the Year and Cy Young Award finalist Aaron Nola of the Phillies, Stan Hochman award winner and legendary sportswriter Ray Didinger and many others to be revealed at this year’s 115th annual dinner. Over the next few days and weeks, a number of other award winners will be announced. The PSWA’s signature event, the Most Courageous Athlete, will be announced at the conclusion of the dinner.
