VOORHEES, N.J – There are days for the Flyers like Tuesday when the importance of hockey takes a back seat to what is happening before their eyes.
Young fans who are battling forms of cancer visited the team’s locker room at the Flyers Training Center. The appearance was in conjunction with the “Hockey Fights Cancer” series, which locally features the Flyers against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, Nov. 20.
Other teams from around the NHL will be playing in similar matches.
All across the Flyers’ room there were smiles on the faces of kids and players alike. It’s just a great experience for everyone.
“For most guys (players), they’ve probably been touched (by cancer) in some way,” Travis Sanheim said. “I think that any way we can help out. . .I think today is going to be a great day. Something that they’re going to enjoy and we’re going to enjoy as well.”
Sanheim agrees with the premise this is a good part of the platform professional athletes have.
“It’s a day when you get off the ice and there’s not much to worry about,” Sanheim said. “This might help the kids get away from it (the daily challenge) a little bit. I think it’s good that we are able to do that and help out the way we can.”
Travis Konecny wanted everyone to have a good time.
“All the kids in there deserve a fun day,” he said. “It’s going to be a good hour or so. Looking forward to it.
“They get to do whatever they want. It doesn’t matter what we’ve got going on. It’s going to put a smile on our faces, puts a smile on their faces. We’re all looking forward to it.”
Trevor Zegras said it’s always fun to interact with these youngsters.
“Not only does it makes their day but it makes your day also,” he said. “To spend time with the little guys, it’s really cool.
“Good day or bad day, that’s something you can always hang your hat on. I think it’s something everyone can relate to. Which is good and some thing which I think a lot of people have compassion for.”
