The Ryan Ellis saga with the Flyers is finally over.
On Sunday, the Flyers unloaded the injured defenseman and the remaining two years of an eight-year, $50-million contract to the San Jose Sharks.
Ellis, who hasn’t played since the 2021-22 season due to a pelvic injury, and a conditional sixth-round draft pick went to the Sharks in exchange for forward Carl Grundstrom and defenseman Artem Guryev.
The sixth-round pick will be the earlier of two picks Philadelphia currently owns in the 2026 draft – its own and one held by Columbus.
Depending on further transactions, the Flyers have five picks in the ’26 draft, with one in each of the first three rounds and one in each of the sixth and seventh rounds.
After acquiring Ellis from the Nashville Predators prior to the 2021-22 season, the Flyers watched Ellis play only four games before he was injured. They thought they had picked up a major impact player, who helped the Predators win the 2017 Stanley Cup but that didn’t happen.
Ellis, 34, is expected to remain on long-term injured reserve. He has an annual cap hit of $6.25 million for the final two years of his contract.
Grundstrom has played 292 NHL games. The 27-year-old Swede spent five seasons with the Los Angeles Kings.
Guryev is a 22-year-old Russian who was a fifth-round pick of the Sharks in 2021. He has yet to play in the NHL.
