Tyson Foerster has already made his mark on the National Hockey League and on Thursday he was rewarded for that achievement.
The Flyers’ 23-year-old right wing received a new, two-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $3.75 million. The total agreement is worth $7.5 million.
In just 166 career games, the Alliston, Ontario, Canada native has registered 48 goals/83 points.
This past season was a breakout one for Foerster. He scored 25 goals and added 18 assists for 43 points, playing in all but one of the maximum 82 games on the schedule.
The 2024-25 campaign saw him finish with the highest shooting percentage on the Flyers with a 17.6 percent mark. His 25 goals were second only to Matvei Michkov’s 26. Foerster was third in power-play points (eight) and his 43 overall points ranked fourth on the team.
In addition, the 25-goal season was his second straight campaign of at least 20.
Tyson’s best game of the season took place this past April 9 when he scored a three-goal hat trick in the Flyers’ 8-5 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Brad Shaw, who was the Flyers’ interim head coach for that game, was impressed with Foerster’s performance, which put him over the 20-mark.
“Twenty goals is a nice threshold,” Shaw said after the game. “Not many guys do it, never mind his age. He hasn’t been given a ton of offensive responsibility either. For him to do it on kind of a checking line role is probably even more impressive. He’s a real diligent young man, a real pro, mature beyond his years. And it shows in his game. Couldn’t be happier for him to get that hat trick tonight.”
It was a wild third period that night, in which the two teams combined for a total of nine goals, including two by Foerster.
“It was pretty cool,” Foerster said of his hat trick. “I know this building is awesome. It was pretty cool to get a hat trick here, that’s for sure.”
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Foerster made his NHL debut for the Flyers on Mar. 9, 2023, at Carolina and scored his first NHL goal on Mar. 18, 2023, vs. Carolina.
Foerster was the Flyers’ first round pick (23rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft.
Prior to joining the Flyers, Foester played junior hockey for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he finished with 52 goals and 114 points in 139 games. During the 2019-20 season, he led the OHL in power play goals with 18.
From 2020-23, Foerster spent time with the Barrie Colts, Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL), and the Flyers. In 2022-23, he had a breakout season in the AHL with 20 goals and 48 points which led the Phantoms in points and power play goals (8). He also represented the Phantoms at the AHL All-Star game in 2023. Through his 99 AHL games played he registered 32 goals and 68 points.
Internationally, Foerster represented Canada at the 2022 Under-20 World Junior Championship, tallying six points (three goals/six points) in seven games to win a gold medal. He also recently appeared in the 2025 IIHF World Championship with Canada posting two goals and one assist in seven games.
