Flyers’ van Riemsdyk out 5-6 weeks due to lower-body injury

VOORHEES, N.J. – The Flyers’ early-season hopes took a big hit on Monday when it was announced forward James van Riemsdyk will miss five to six weeks with a lower-body injury.

Van Riemsdyk suffered the injury early in Saturday night’s 5-2 loss at Colorado.

The 29-year-old van Riemsdyk played only eight shifts (5:13 of ice time) before leaving.

The Flyers signed van Riemsdyk to a five-year, $35-million free-agent contract on July 1.

He’s a former first-round draft pick (2007, second overall).

Van Riemsdyk opened the season on a line with Wayne Simmonds and rookie center Mikhail Vorobyev.

The Flyers have been carrying two spare forwards – Jordan Weal and Dale Weise – so one of them could be used for Tuesday night’s home opener against the San Jose Sharks.

Or they could call up a player from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
