Goaltender Alex Lyon signed to 2-year contract by Flyers

Good thing the Flyers pay Alex Lyon by the season and not the save.

At least not in that Phantoms’ recent five-overtime playoff game, in which Lyon stopped 94 of 95 shots.

But no worry. On Saturday, the Flyers signed Lyon to a new two-year contract, just days after the goaltender had ation.

Philadelphia had given Lyon a reported $918,831 (per year) qualifying offer.

If the two sides had not reached an agreement, a hearing before an independent arbitrator would have been held to settle the matter.

The Flyers have veteran goalies Brian Elliott and Michal Neuvirth under contract for one more year but Lyon would appear to be first in line if either of those two is sidelined during the season.

The 25-year-old Lyon played in 11 games for the Flyers last season, recording a 4-2-1 mark, along with a .905 save percentage and 2.75 goals-against average.

Meanwhile, winger Taylor Leier also filed for arbitration. Barring a settlement, his case will be heard sometime between July 20 and Aug. 4 in Toronto.

Lyon, New Jersey native Anthony Stolarz (who is still unsigned) and No. 1 prospect Carter Hart figure to jockey for playing time on the Phantoms this season.

As for Lyon, the Yale product did some of his best work in the Calder Cup playoffs, taking the Phantoms to the conference finals by recording a 1.98 GAA and .944 save percentage.

The gem of that postseason performance was the aforementioned 94-save game in a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers.

During the Phantoms’ regular season, Lyon went 16-8-2 with a 2.75 GAA and .913 SP.
