Flyers’ Giroux hopes Eagles fly high at Super Bowl

Flyers’ Claude Giroux, who calls himself a big Eagles fan, gets best wishes from Eagles coach Doug Pederson before Thursday night’s game vs. Tampa Bay.
While Claude Giroux’s hockey skills figure to be involved in today’s NHL All-Star Game at Tampa, some of his thoughts might be elsewhere.
Giroux, you see, is a devoted Eagles fan and with just the third Super Bowl in franchise history only a week away, he can be forgiven for being distracted.
This past Thursday night, no one was more excited to see Eagles coach Doug Pederson receive an autographed jersey and take part in the ceremonial opening faceoff than the Flyers captain.
While Giroux might be a native of Canada, he’s lived in the Philadelphia area for a decade and his allegiance is clearly with the Eagles.
“They’re playing some great football,’’ Giroux said. “To see how the city is behind them. . .only one game left, anything can happen. They’re playing a good team (the favored New England Patriots) but at the same time they’re playing some good football.’’
Giroux hurried back from Washington last Sunday to take in the Eagles’ 38-7 mauling of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game at the Linc.
“I’m rooting for them (the Eagles),’’ Giroux said of the Super Bowl. “I’m pretty excited to watch the game.’’
For the Vikings game, Giroux was sitting way upstairs with the True Green clientele that can get a little frisky at times – particularly with out-of-towners dressed in purple.
“I think it was good to be up there,’’ Giroux chuckled. “You know, the best fans are up there usually. They were having a good time.’’
